Guernsey’s fibre broadband rollout is approaching full completion, marking one of the most significant infrastructure upgrades in the island’s history. With over 99% of homes and businesses now able to connect to fibre, the island is entering the final phase of modernising its communications network.
As part of this transition, Guernsey’s copper network will be permanently retired in early 2027.
The migration from copper to fibre is a long-term investment that strengthens island‑wide connectivity for decades to come. Fibre brings faster speeds, greater resilience, and improved performance for services relied upon daily — from streaming and home working to essential services such as telecare and landlines.
To date, 82% of broadband customers have already upgraded to fibre. While this represents strong progress, the copper switch‑off is not automatic. Any remaining customers still using copper-based broadband or landline services will need to move to fibre to maintain connectivity.
Sure Group CEO Alistair Beak said: “Guernsey’s fibre rollout has been one of the island’s most ambitious infrastructure programmes, and we are now in its final stages. Almost every home and business can get fibre, and the majority already have. The focus now is on ensuring the remaining copper customers switch in good time. With the copper switch‑off underway, the message is clear: the time to act is now.”
The upgrade has been welcomed by the States of Guernsey, with senior representatives highlighting the role fibre plays in strengthening the digital and economic future of the island. This investment supports productivity, innovation and long-term digital resilience for homes and businesses, while ensuring Guernsey remains competitive internationally.
The transition to a fully fibre network ensures that islanders benefit from improved reliability, increased speeds, and network performance suited to modern demands. It also provides a strong foundation for future digital services and infrastructure projects.
